The last time we caught up on the progress of the V8’s, we were leaving the Ipswich Super Speedway after 3 days of racing that made, to be perfectly honest, not a whole lot of difference to the title picture, despite how close it may be. As the Supercars series rolls into Eastern Creek for the Sydney Supersprint (and the beginning of the business end of the 2016 season) this weekend, we thought we’d update the uninformed on just who the major players are.

The Leader: Jamie Whincup

Image: Jamie WhincupWhincup has been looking pretty much untouchable for a while now, and after a double-podium display at Ipswich, it’s hard to imagine him letting a 150 point lead out of his grasp any time soon. Nonetheless, a staggeringly heated battle is hotting up between him and his team-mate…

The Challenger: Shane Van Gisbergen

Image: SpeedcafeA fair chunk of the Supercars’ fan base will tell you that the championship is starting to boil down to a two horse race. As SVG and Whincup battle for supremacy seemingly in each race, the two Red Bull teammates push each other to new heights and, further ahead of the rest of the pack. However, there’s one man who thinks he can take advantage of this situation.
The Underdog: Mark Winterbottom

Sitting a not-too-distant third in the championship standings, Frosty has made clear his intentions to let the two Red Bulls battle it out to their hearts content. The reason? He thinks they’re going to take each other out.
Speaking with the press earlier this week, Winterbottom said, “They are fighting each other already. They are in a big battle and Shane has been really quite aggressive. They both have different styles and it has been great to watch as a spectator. But it will heat up and they are going to be racing each other. It will become a lot more important at the end of the year and they could hurt each other. We will have to wait and see what happens.
Can Winterbottom Stephen Bradbury his way into the rarefied atmosphere of the championship over the weekend? Only time will tell.

The Veteran: Craig Lowndes

Image: SupercarsLowndesy remains an ever present threat to the big 3, coming off a hugely successful Ipswich Supersprint which saw him claim top spot in the feature race. This weekend is slightly different though, as he straps himself down to start his 600th V8 Supercars race. Regardless of how he finishes, that’s a feat that has never and possibly will never be matched.
