    New tyres for Patchy

fitted a set of Falken RT-615's today. $220 per corner

they don't apper to be too much different to the old RT215's which is great because they suited my requirements perfectly.
Only drawback was, I had to make the hard decision to revert back to 15" rimms.

I have to sell the 16" now. It is a real shame as i loved those 16" rimms . I had been lusting after them for about 3 years. then finally got a set at a reasonable price. but in my case its performance over looks. Concessions have to be made occasionally.

but the car feel like it used to with the new shoes. Especially after driving with crappy tyres the last few months.

welll....come to think of it. It probably is. 2 yeras ago I paid about $185 per corner for basically the same tyre. But it was discontinued version of the current one.
So..... Falken have essitially gone & changed the tread pattern and mucked around with the compound a little. Achieved what at the moment, feels like exactly the same tyre and charged $35 more per tyre. so it is a little bit of a ripp off.

But It is the best road tyre i've driven on. There is possebly better on the marked.
but tyres are a compromise. The tyre I love & rave about and think its the dicks knees will be completely useless for another.

What it came down to was I wanted tyre for spirited driving in the next 2 years. They will have a few race days & hopefully a skidpan or 2. Chase the odd motorbike & WRX's around the twisties on Putty Rd within the speed limit of course. The odenary falken's or yokohama for $135 will not be able to stand up to the punishment I will serve them. Also I prefer not to drive on tyres older than 2 YO as the compounds will harden after 2-3 years. That is if the car doesn't have a Garage. R compound Tyres get affected by too many heat cycles and you need to be going absolute apesh*t to keep them in operating temprature & they will only last 5-6k km (The R888 seem to be an exception to this rule) where as the current tyres will last around 15-20k km. which for me....is just on 2 years.

And I love the feel of those stiff sidewalls

so it all comes down to what you require from your tyres....and that is also very subjectve. I think the money i spent is worthwhile.

15" tyres are NOT cheap! Fark me, im having dramas finding tyres for my car, i want them a bit wider tho, like 235 or 225, all on the ugly side of $250 each! Its so hard to find anything bigger than 205 too!

I would presume very expensive but hey, one of the best street tires you can buy is worth it

I thought the RT615s had a longer life expectancy than the 215s but with the same level of grip/performance?

'Work' wheels as in the wheels you put on the car to drive to your place of employment, or 'Work' wheels as in the drool-worthy shiny round things from Japan?

I hope it to be the latter rather than the former. And please post pic if you've got one?

    : )

    Depends what you call bad

these will be fairly hard 20k km with some track days. A person doing 40k km PA will hate theses type of tyres. Thats why they use tyers like the C drives, which can last up to 50-60k km but therefore crumble under extreeme conditions like track work. where advans & RT615s will hold up very well. thats what you exepect from these type of tyres.

another issue is the weight of the car. dont expect them to last that long in a wrx er an Evo as they are considerably heavier cars.

like i said My MX5 is a weekend warrior in the last year i did 8k km they were extreemly fun 8k km.

they will be nowhere near as good as a fresh set of DO1's which seem to be the norm for the MX5 racers in production sports & super sprints. I found the RT215's superpb in the wet at wakefield. The R888 I believe are also better (faster) than the RT615's in the dry. you will find about ONE - TWO seconds between a good set of DO'1s & the RT 615's at wakefield racetrack
In a shagged set of DO'1 which has been driven on the road to & from events , occasional thrash up some twistie road & maybe half way through its tread.....you will find time wise, will be the same. except i found the DO1's a little better & slightly more controllable when drifting through some corners at the top of wakefield. compared to the RT 215's (RT615's predecessor)

RT615's will get to operating temprature quicker than DO1's
RT615 will overheat mutch quicker & start getting a little mushier on the limit at the racetrack.

DO1 i personally don't recomend for road use. I found you have to go absolutley apeshit to keep them on their optimum operating temprature. & take some serious conering to keep them there. I also think that road use absolutley kills thier performance.

In sydney winter RT215's take 2 or 3 corners to warm up so do be carefull in city traffic. In peak hr traffic they mostly do not get up to operating temp. They can bite when not on operating temp. but so can the DO1's

The RT 615 is very well suited to skidpan days. where they don't get a chance to get too hot but i've read people still need to cool them down with water spray between go's.

The RT 215 had a reputation of loosing grip in puddles. never had that problem & i did some serious wet weather driving up putty Rd & the old pac. The RT615's are meant to have solved the apparent issue. I have not driven the RT615 in wet weather.

    The R888 is probabl;y somewhere between the DO1's & the RT615's

DO1 wil prolly last you 5-8k km
R888 will last somewher around 8-10k km
RT615 will prolly last 15-20k km.
All the above depends how heavy the car is. The style of your driving & your allingnment settings. Mine is reasonably aggressive. Driving as well as allingnment settings

I've not driven on R888 but kula has a set waiting to be fitted to his car. He will be the man. Eggbox may have had a set as well. maybe they can commet.

    hope thats not too confusing
thats what my experience has been
