Default Beams 3s-GE in MR2

Is it possible to transplant a Beams 3S-GE from a Altezza to a SW20 MR2?

If so what would be involved? i.e straight swap or custom work?

Thats actually not a Beams motor from an Altezza tho.

It would be harder as the engine is situated north south in a rwd configurment, where as Mels 3sge Beams from a late model SW20, is east west, fwd config. Never looked into it.

yes it is possible, but you will need alot of the parts from the FWD beams motor to make it work. so many people will tell you it isnt worth it as you will need a altezza halfcut and a beams MR2 halfcut. you need the FWD sump and some other parts off it im not sure of. so factor in about 5 grand or so for the beams redtop SW20 halfcut and then another i dunno 5 grand for the RS200 front cut. so its another 5 grand for the extra bit of VVTI and 10 horepower .. your call..

Your best bet is probably just not buying a SW20...

Or just whacking a REV III 3sgte motor in which has more power than the beams redtop stock. Second to that it would be a cheaper option to drop a 1mz, 3mz, or 5mz motor in there. (There was also a limited production grey top beams motor in Japan only RAV4s, good luck with getting that in an MR.)

Ram what do you have against SW20's? Is it the pistons or the abundant torque from the 2 litre? ;P

Seriously though i would love to see a 20b pp motor in an mr, the whole drive train would have to be bespoke, massive waste in something as heavy as the SW20 but never the less, it would be awesome.

the SW20 isnt that heavy. considering its 1989 technology and all the panels are steel.
there is ALOT of weight that can be shed by making FRP or CFRP panels.
if you replaced the..
bonnet
doors
boot
engine lid
front fenders
service panels.
also the whole stock exhaust system is very heavy,
the dump pipe is cast iron on the turbo models and i know that the stock NA muffler weighs 20KG. they are still very nimble cars. if you like handling you will love the feel of an mr2.

or a 3VZ V6.
i know of one car with a 5VZ and a GT42 or GT40 or something :Muahahahaahah its going to be sick!

No, i meant like car audio amplifiers, they weigh quite a bit.

Xero doesnt seem to want to let that one go.

I remember reading another US page about a guy with a couple of AW11s and he'd modded each with a different approach. The track designated one had a GT28RS (disco potato)!!! He had a run down of each component in the aw11 and how much weight he lost from the car with the removal of all the bits and peices, ill try and find it.

Point is, beams = hard to find, at least 5k for a halfcut, beams = great response, na fun blah blah, but 3SGTE = where its at.

REV III 3SGTE > Beams Black/Redtop.

from wikipedia.

The fourth generation 3S-GE, also known as the BEAMS 3S-GE began production in 1997. The first version was equipped with VVT-i and produced 197 bhp (147 kW, 200 PS) @ 7000 rpm. It was available in a few models sold only in Japan - the MR2 G and G-Limited, the Celica ST202 SS-II and SS-III and the Caldina. BEAMS is an acronym which stands for Breakthrough Engine with Advanced Mechanism System.
In 1998 a second version was released with dual VVT-i (variable timing on both the intake and exhaust cams), titanium valves, battery-backed injectors and a slightly higher compression ratio (11:1 instead of 10.5:1). This engine powered the Altezza RS200 and produced around 207 bhp (154 kW, 210 PS) @ 7600 rpm.
The two variants are easily identifiable by colour. The cam covers on the earlier model are red and on the later model, black. They are often referred to as the "Red Top" and the "Black Top" respectively.
The "Grey Top" BEAMS 3S-GE was an available engine option in the Rav4 in Japan. Even though the valve cover on this engine is black, it is referred to as "Grey Top" to differentiate it from the Dual-VVTi "Black Top" in the Altezza. Power output is 177 bhp (132 kW, 180 PS) @ 6600 rpm.

Is what should of been in the NA MR2 in the first place!

Kamate If i were you try and souce a redtop Beams...sure the power isnt as much as the blacktop, but it is a lot less hassles....I believe mel soucred her motor through SSS Automotive in Girraween.

Haven driven Mels MR2 definitely a major improvement over a standard 3SGE actually made a NA SW20 MR2 fun to drive!!! and didnt feel like a nugget!
