Yonas' EGK24A

I had a clean EG Civic Vti and Yonas sold me a set of R888's. I remember him driving a beaten up blue EG civic with a red Bride bucket seat, his interior was non-existant (driving in a stripped car was something I hadn't experienced before) and I remember his car made a whole lot more noises than my one did. After we had driven down the road to grab some Indo food it was clear as day to me that he loved the car he was driving and a few flat shifts later it was clear to me that he loved to drag. Justin Fox: It's a little taboo to talk about it but I know you guys were both into the street racing scene which was once really big in Sydney, but even before that you guys were friends in New Zealand right? What were you both doing there in NZ? And how did you meet? Yonas Liu: I was into street racing back in Auckland NZ, it was really big there back in the days (1997-2000). I didn't know Zi in NZ but he used to hang out with my best mate's little brother. I didn't actually get to know Zi until I moved to Sydney. I was trying to sell a Recaro SPG seat on Toymods and Zi wanted it for his AE86, which had a 4AC motor. We hung out, haunted wreckers and fixed cars. JF: What did you race in NZ? YL: I had a JDM EF7 CRX with a ZC motor (1.6 twin cam non vtec). I ran 14.7 down the 1/4 mile LOL. JF: 14.7 LOL. You're crazy fast now, but what was it like back then? JDM was new right? And cars were slow? Were you guys modifying your cars harder than the people around you? YL: Back then we used to race against JDM DC2R's, R33 GTST's and a lot of old cars. I was pretty quick in the old EF considering I ran a non vtec motor. I tried so hard to modify it to make it faster. It was the same deal when I used to street race in Sydney. I was a poor student who couldn't afford an engine swap. Even a B16A was way too expensive for me. JF: So how did you make the leap from 14second passes to 11second passes? YL: The street racing scene died and in 2003 Zi asked me to race his EGK20A EG Civic at the legal Western Sydney International Dragway (WSID). I accepted the challenge. Our 1st run we had drag radials and we snapped an axle. We've gone through a lot of trial and error ever since but we're getting faster and gaining some respect. JF: A lot of people come and go but you've been into it for so long. Honda, NA and drags, how is it that you're still so into it? YL: It's always about progress. With some crazy weight reduction methods I took 200kg out from the car to run an 11.82 with a stock K24A motor, by adding cams I only ran 11.73. I seem to be stuck on the 11.73 second pass and the EGK24A just doesn't seem to want to go any faster no matter what we do to it, but recently I've been getting into circuit racing, it's something different for me. JF: But what has made you stick to Honda/NA? Why not boost it and be done with it? YL: NA is more challenging. A boosted K swap Honda can easily run 9s in "street car" trim. Back in the day I used to read super street and turbo magazines and I used to dream of running a 12sec pass the all motor way. In 1997 the American Skunk2 DC2 ran a 12.9 sec pass the all motor way, that was an inspiration for me. JF: Over the years I've seen JDMyard gain respect, grow stronger as a business and form a community too. A big change was when you and Zi joined forces. How did that come about? YL: I used to work full time for a security wholesaler but I worked for JDMyard as well without my boss knowing about it. I was always jumping on msn during work hours to sell goods. The time came where the company I was working for was moving to Wollongong, they asked me to move with them but I thought it was too far to travel. Zi wanted to open shop so the timing was perfect. JF: I remember Zi used to sell goods from his own garage in Kingsford. What was opening the shop like? YL: We had JDMyard up and running for about a year in a small room above Westside Mufflers. It was an insane step to open up a shop. I still remember our 1st day there, we had only a handful of parts to sell! Ultimately I think being known for the company behind the 1st K series swap in Australia helped to boost our image and sales. JF: So where to from here Yonas? YL: With JDMyard we'll keep pushing Honda, all motor and front wheel drive. Personally I'll try a little circuit racing and next year we'll return to the 1/4 mile again to run 10s. Man this car makes me want to cry everytime I see it
I want a civic already .This is the best example of a civic eg in my eyes. Just so simple to look at, no fussiness of out there colours and crazy offset. real jdm performance style tuning how do you know this. the under the hood bit of this and many articles let alone seeing it in person which I would one day love too love everything about it |
