FRPilot's Mark II Tourer V JZX100
Photography By Phil (Pockets) Interview by David P. (.:JDM/Dave:.) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "When you glance at a ride cruising through your local suburb that looks like it's just been rolled out of an import container, shipped fresh from the midnight back streets and passes of Japan, you instanly know. The unmistakable aesthetics, tuning cues and stance crafted by it's owner with a vision to encapsulate an aspect of JDM Culture that truely makes this car emanate a quality that can really only be described as "gentlemanly". How long have you liked cars for and when did you discover the JDM concept? Back in the late 90s when I used to watch Drift Tengoku and Video Option videos on VHS. Taniguchi was killing it and Kazama was still building his reputation up. When D1 was in it's prime and street touge team meets in the local mountains with Nomuken were frequent and plentiful. Before D1 got big, before the politics, when it was exclusive to Japan... but thats another story. haha. How long have you owned the car for? I've had the car for about 2 years now pretty much. I first bought it in August 2007 and it took me about 7 months of daily searching (my own sources) to find a stock, manual, grade 5 example with books while being under 30,000km (I wanted to be the first and only one in Australia). After finding it I enlisted an importer and got it over here. It was a hell of a wait with plenty of delays but it was well worth it. What drew you to choose the JZX100? I was in love with Silvias before this car but then I got sick of having a loud car (I dont think theres such thing as a quiet Silvia), rough suspension and basically an old car (I owned a Onevia before). Before this I was looking for an Aristo with a 2JZ-GTE VVti & 6MT but found out I would not have been able to pull it off without spending excessive amounts so the next best thing was the JZX100. I now believe the JZX100 is the best balance for a street car costwise. 4 doors, turbo, JDM, rear wheel drive, manual, luxury, quiet and fast. What other car in Australia can balance all these aspects like a JZX can? What's a feature of this car you absolutly love? I can't say, I can't pin it down to just 1, theres a few. It's rarer than a Chaser, it's reliable, it looks classy, it's quiet, it's got heaps of torque and it's fast and the most important thing to me is that it's very comfortable ^^. What's a feature you dislike/irritates you? It's low, very low, but then again I have myself to blame for that as making it look good will always be a compromise and I can't take it everywhere I'd like to go. Most if not all shopping centres are out of bounds for me (bar 1 or 2 places), other than that sometimes I get more attention than I'd really like. Oh and the parts, man they cost heaps, trust me when I say heaps. Pretty much all of the parts were sourced from Japan apart from a few things like filters, etc. The final thing isn't really a fault with the car, its more of a fault with me. I spent too much time making everything on it perfect. I spent so much time importing it and I really don't drive it enough and because it's in pretty much new condition I feel obliged just to keep the interior and exterior spotless and even go to great lengths just to keep it in that condition, such as avoiding washing the car just to prevent swirl marks and excessive vacuuming of the interior. I know, I'm over the top. Have you taken it to the track? If so what's your best time If not, why? It's a street car and it'll stay on the street JZX's arent meant to be track cars and it would cost me too much to maintain. Even in Japan JZX100's are still considered fairly expensive cars to drift. I'I've never been to the track with this car and don't plan to. I've spent close to $6500 on a genuine Vertex kit and paint (on just those 2 items alone) and don't plan to take it to the track just to smash it up, would you? Where did you draw your tuning styling inspiration from for this car? I wanted to pull off the true JDM street style JZX100 (and be the first to do it in Australia) like they do in Japan (which they do flawlessly mind you) and I think I've got gotten pretty close to it. Pretty much most of the mods are simple power upgrades and dress up mods. I wanted to be unique and original and the only one to build and style this rare car before there was an influx of JZX's coming into the country and I'm happy to say that I think I've achieved that. Essentially most of my inspiration has come from the typical street JZXs driven around in Japan by your regular salaryman. I've been told by many that my car looks like it belongs in Japan/just came off the boat/most JDM looking JZX they've seen which is exactly what the direction I wanted. ![]() What are your future plans for the car? As it stands I'm happy with it. I'll admit I've spent most of my time on the exterior. I don't plan to put a full 2835 or 3037 pro kit (etc) on it as it will just throw the car off balance and turn it into a money pit. Most the street JZX's in Japan are running stock turbos, at most they will high flow them unless the turbo blows or they track it. It's been engineered and the current setup is great on the street. I think 210kw at the wheels is more than enough for me and I get good economy too. Other than the odd wheel changes I'm done with the car and will sell it once the JZX110 is ready for compliance in Australia. I'll be heading down a similar route with the 110 but it will be better than my current 100 for sure. Last edited by Justin Fox : 28-10-09 at 04:22 PM. |

Luce has those little lights on the front corners too, and they are lit from a fibre optic cable from the parklights .
