Default What's left of MG.

Ok, it's not JDM...but it's still interesting :p

What happened when MG filed for bankrupcy? Workers downed tools, and walked out. The place was left this way... with no security. This bloke walked in and started snapping away. Some images are broken, but interesting nonetheless!

I second that. I wouldn;t mind a brand new right out of the factory AE86 shell. In fact I would love one for free.

MG engines for free? meh, good enough....gimme!!!

Just fought. Think about all the tools and gear lying around. Man, there's tonnes of stuff you could take. But would it be legal?? I mean, when that ship in England ran aground with a few containers washed up, it wasn;t 100% legal to take right?

Sad to hear as well. MG did make a few good cars didn;t they?? As long as it isn;t Mitsubishi in Aus.

A very sad time indeed. I know you guys like AE86's but sheesh, the MG factory is closing is like a friggin funeral ! show some respect guys. You may not like the MG (personally I dont) but at least respect the bloodline of the car.

Yeah does seem like a graveyard. Spooky stuff.

Can't believe there's just half finished shells lying around. Will all that be assumed by the Chinese now?

I think it's kinda murky as to what the Chinese do, and don't own. They own the rights and tooling to some of the cars that MG made (I think the TF roadster & 75 sedan) but not the entire range I think. So potentially they can't touch a lot of the stuff, which might belong to MG-Rover creditors.

Sound right to you, Kijima?

Sure does, the first chinese MG TF rolled of the factory floor in china sometime late march. MG was sold 2 years ago to a chinese auto maker 'nanjing' so its no real big suprize I guess. MG/Rover creditors sold off both rover 25 and 75 models to a different company. It wasnt even as though one company had bought the whole trainset.

Very sad stuff, you may not like MG's or Rovers (I secretly was fond of the Royal blue Conisseur Rover 75, but I will never admit it) but the way things have been done leaves alot to be desired.

But you know, when it comes down to it, if MGRover sold desireable cars, then the factory would be picked clean by now, either by JDMST looting team or by 3rd parties making offers to the liquidators for the remaining stuff. It's all still sitting there because it's no good and no one wants it.

Historically speaking, it's been one big, long, downhill slide since all the big English makes were consolidated into British Leyland in the late 60s. If you look at all of the various makes, there is no blip of success, no runaway model that could have saved the company, nothing that they didn't screw up with poor build quality or simply poor design. Even when they used Honda engines and chassis they couldn't make a decent go of it.

They even lost money on every one of the old-shape Minis they ever sold. For a car whose design was locked down and paid for in 1963 that was sold in big volumes until the mid 90s, that's quite an amazing feat of management. I mean if there was something about the design that was expensive to make, etc then you had 30+ years to fix it. THIRTY YEARS.

Then BMW bought MGRover in the late 90s I think, and they did their best, and introduced the new Range Rover and Mini. Beemer then realised the rest of the company was crap so they kept R-R and Mini and sold the rest to a consortium of British businessmen (called Phoenix) for ten pounds. That's right...about $25 for the whole company, and Beemer took over MGRover's outstanding debts. So Phoenix took over MGRover for A$25 and was 100% debt-free. 5yrs later this happens.

40 years...40 bloody years...and they couldn't put out a decently lucrative car. Not even after all their debts were paid by BMW. The company deserved to die, and the circumstances of its death are quite fitting IMHO.

No arguments for how the company was run, I was thinking more along the lines of there will never be another brittish MG, and that to me is a sad thing. I worry about Jaguar which surely Ford will 'have' to sell from its skirts as its a red headed stepchild of a company which it is. There is talk about an Indian car manufacturer buying Jaguar from Ford.

I recently was offered a job by an indian company Mahindra, and guess what... They wil be here in Australia mid 07' with the <insert drum roll> Mahindra 'pik-up' (no, I havnt spelt it wrong) This will be the first fully imported Indian vehicle backed by an Indian Manufacturer to enter Australia. (just think TATA but slightly better looking and factory backed) Mahindra are a huge concern in India, funny thing is I hadnt heard about them till I recieved an email from them recently.

Mahindra were a manfucturer of Tractors until the india car market boomed, just like the chinese car market is booming! I know the sound and thought of indian and chinese cars in australia is scary, but its going to happen so we may as well get used to it. Sorta like when Korean cars hit the market, Remember the first time you clapped eyes on a hyundai Scoupe on the roads? /me shudders

If an Idian Tractor manufacturer that has come good making cars (sound like a familar story... Lamborghini anyone?) is somthing that scares you, then just wait till you see some of the chinese cars. I give you the dong feng coupe! aka the'EQ7240BP'

Obviously I declined the offer to work with the Indian Manufacturing giant, but maybe I should have found out first if they are the ones in discussions with jaguar... I mean how bad could a Indian XK8 be?

Well the worst part of working with an India company is:

- you just KNOW where their IT helpdesk will be
- your company car is gonna really, really suck...I don't think you'll get an XK8, more like a Hindustani Ambassador or something. Maybe they'll give you a Royal Enfield to ride

As for Dong Fengs, I see heaps of them in Shanghai and their model names are always AS0989088092 or QS098908908282. I mean, literally 8+ digits.

Just seen these photos, how sads that, the power is still on the computers are still running just like they have all gone on lunch or something. The company I work for used to be a MG Rover dealer, till their death but we still service and repair the 75/ZT, F and TF, ZS, and are 1 of only 2 places with the tooling to do so. Whilst they arent the best built cars (quite rubbish actually) a few k series motors wont go astray for the 3 blown head gaskets we have sitting at work.

I'd love to go and visit there piece of history
